Marathoner for climate change

Emma DeCamp traces the origins of her environmental consciousness to a 7-week backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail when she was 15. She pursued environmental studies and non-fiction writing at Middlebury College to develop her passion for storytelling, particularly in service of spreading awareness about climate change and environmental justice.

In 2019, at 24 years old, Emma ran the Boston Marathon and decided to use her run to inspire people to support the Woodwell Climate Research Center. She set up her own GoFundMe site and raised over $5,000 in 6 weeks.

Emma decided to fundraise for Woodwell Climate Research Center because she knew her efforts would have impact. She worked with members of the Woodwell Climate team directly, which she says made her fundraising effort feel all the more personal.

Emma hopes her generation will “commit as a collective to affect policy, live in closer harmony with nature, and ultimately eliminate emissions.” Thank you, Emma, for your meaningful contribution and dedication to climate science.

Woodwell Climate has large-scale scientific authority, yet the smaller size of the organization allows it to be agile, avoid bureaucracy, and affect change. I was confident that the money I raised would go furthest at Woodwell Climate Research Center. Emma DeCamp
